Sports fishing
I spotted the following in The Times’s RSS feed this morning
New anglers cross a fine line:
Continental immigrants, not understanding the British sport of catching fish and putting them back, have been illegally eating carp and pike….
and I do sympathise. Back in Norway I always enjoyed fishing, and grew up fishing in the sea, lakes and rivers, although my favourite type of fishing is for trout in inland lakes. And of course we cooked and eat the fish we catch.
It was therefore a bit of a culture shock when I came to the UK on a boy scout trip as a 17 year old, and was taken out by the familiy I stayed with for “a spot of fishing”, and discovered that the british definition of fishing and mine were worlds apart.
I had never seen anyone taking along so much kit to catch a fish and then throw it back in again! Hm! So I am afraid that I’ve not done any fishing in the 8 years we’ve lived in the UK.

Sky plus – at last
It’s taken us a long time to get on to the PVR bandwagon – as we are not really big consumers of TV. And all we have is a old 21“ TV in the living room.
But saying that – we do have satellite TV (Sky) and most available channels except for the sports channels. What has started to annoy me is that with all this phenomenal selection of material, there is rarely anything I’d like to see, and what I’d like to see I tend to forget about. So I have for a long time been looking at something like a Tivo or a Sky+ box to enable me/us to set up a recording schedule when we first hear about something we’d like to see, and then timeshift the viewing to the weekend.
But we have never managed to get around to this, until we started getting problems with our satellite reception a week or so ago. The problem is either in the decoder box, or in the alignment of the dish – or both. And as the dish is mounted on the chimney, there is absolutely no way I’m going up there to investigate.
So the easiest way out was actually to order Sky+ including the PVR – as Sky will then turn up to modify the dish, and deliver a new decoder in one fell swoop. And yesterday we ordered this – with a date for installation being given as this Friday!
We ordered the smallest of the Sky+ boxes – as the theory is that we can use the Elgato box to archive away to our computers any programs we’d like to keep, if we indeed would like to keep anything at all above and beyond the 40 hours the box will record on it’s internal harddisk.
As a sideeffect of this The Gizzer will get the old Sky box in his room, and thereby full control of his own viewing. We may never see him again….
